CHAPTER SEVEN

CASSIE FINISHED WRITING her notes and leaned back in her chair. Leith had been correct in his diagnosis. He’d removed the cyst and Imani was home once again and recovering. It had been a good call. There was a knock on the door and without waiting for an invitation to enter, Leith strode in.

It had been a couple of weeks since she’d gone to his flat and since then she’d been with Leith and Peter to the movies and on the London Eye on both Saturdays—Leith’s usual access day. The little boy still barely acknowledged his father, but he was beginning to relax with Cassie. However, if she tried to leave him alone with his father, Peter would panic and grab her.

‘I need to speak to you,’ Leith said. His usual calm, easygoing manner was absent. Instead, he looked like someone near the end of his tether.

‘Okay,’ Cassie replied calmly. ‘Coffee?’

Leith shook his head. ‘I need you to come to Skye with me for a few days. Can you do it?’

Cassie frowned. ‘A patient?’

‘No. Nothing like that,’ Leith replied. ‘I have Peter for the whole long weekend and I want to take him to meet his grandparents. I need you to come with me.’

‘Why me?’ Cassie asked after a long pause.

‘I doubt Peter will be happy to spend four days with me unless you’re there.’ He paused. ‘Please, Cassie. I just don’t know how to win him over.’ He pulled a hand across his face. ‘It will be easier for him to have you there. You’ve seen how he is with me.’

‘He’ll warm to you eventually. Give him time.’

‘Eventually isn’t soon enough, Cassie. Right now it’s you he feels comfortable with. He trusts you. You have a way with children. They’re instinctively drawn to you. It doesn’t matter where in the world they are. Here. Africa. Remember Maria’s little boy? You couldn’t even speak his language, yet it didn’t matter.’

As soon as he mentioned Africa, Cassie was back there. She could almost hear the cicadas, smell the sea, feel Leith’s arms around her, his lips on hers.

She shook her head in an attempt to clear it. What were they talking about? Oh, yes, some crazy suggestion that she go with him and Peter to Skye.

It was impossible. Go away with Leith? To his family home? When she’d promised herself she would keep her distance as much as possible?

So why then had she spent those couple of days with Peter and Leith? Now, see what it had started. But that was different. That was a matter of a few hours, not days.

An image of the timid little boy flashed into her head and she tried to push it away.

‘Do you think it’s fair to take him away at this stage?’ she said.

Leith’s face darkened. ‘Do you have any idea how long I’ve fought for this? Finally I have the moral—and legal—right to be with him and I need—want—to spend time with him. I want him to meet my parents and I know he’ll love Skye once he gets there.
